From AI Activity to Operational Capability
Why AI Strategy Matters More Than AI Tools
Joe Comly · Founder, J. Byron Operating Partners
Thursday, Oct 8, 2026 · 6:30 PM · Phoenixville Chamber · 710 Main St
AI has made it easier than ever to experiment with new tools, assistants, and agents. But many businesses mistake AI activity for real progress. In this session, Joe Comly explores why AI is fundamentally different from traditional software implementation, how to avoid common adoption traps, and what it takes to build an AI strategy that creates lasting business value. Attendees will leave with a practical framework for moving beyond experimentation and toward AI becoming a true operational capability.
Speaker Series #4 is in the books! Joe Comly took us from AI activity to operational capability at the Phoenixville Regional Chamber of Commerce. He opened in 2015, in front of a room of IKEA store managers who had never been made ready for the change he was there to announce, and brought that lesson forward to today: the technology is no longer the hard part. People are moving faster than their organizations, so the question has changed from "can we build it?" to "should we build it?" Joe left us with five questions to ask before the next build, and one line that stuck: better equipment doesn't make a better restaurant.
The full talk is at the top of this page. Thanks to Joe for the talk, to the Chamber for the room, and to everyone who came out and kept the questions going for half an hour afterward.
